Lapis lazuli is a sodium aluminium silicate with sulphur, chlorine hydroxyl, and variable inclusions of pyrite and white calcite. The name means "blue rock" and is always a brilliant blue with violet or greenish tints.
The rich blue colour is due to the lazurite that is an essential component of this mineral.
Small crystals of pyrite are always present in lapis lazuli and distinguishes lapis lazuli from its blue cousin - sodalite, which lacks pyrite.
